Dr Smith is a seasoned professional engineer with 42 years of multi-commodity experience in the mining sector. He holds a PhD in mineral industry strategy, a Master of Business Administration, an MSc in engineering and a BSc in engineering specialising in mining, all from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits).
Meet Dr Gordon Smith, Chairperson of the newly established advisory panel for the CSIR Future Production: Mining cluster. Dr Smith is a seasoned professional engineer with 42 years of multi-commodity experience in the mining sector. He holds a PhD in mineral industry strategy, a Master of Business Administration, an MSc in engineering and a BSc in engineering specialising in mining, all from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits). He serves as a trustee and director of various companies, a visiting associate professor at the School of Mining Engineering at Wits, an advisory board member at Wits and a council member (previously served as president) of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Dr Smith’s role at the CSIR will include supporting the organisation to enhance its positioning in the mining industry through guiding strategic direction, the identification of new capabilities and fostering collaboration with public and private industry partners.
