The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is gearing up to showcase a diverse range of cutting-edge technologies at the upcoming launch of the National Science Week (NSW) 2023, which will take place on Saturday, 22 July, at the University of Venda, under the theme “Transforming lives through evidence-based science”.
NSW is an initiative of the Department of Science and Innovation aimed at celebrating science and its significant impact on society. During the launch, thousands of learners from various schools in and around Vhembe District will be exposed to an assortment of activities aimed at exposing them to various career pathways and skills required in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation (STEMI), with the hope of encouraging them to pursue careers in STEMI.
Researchers from the CSIR will exhibit high-end technologies that demonstrate the role played by science and technology in the development of practical and breakthrough innovations in the fields of energy, agriculture, cybersecurity and health.
These will include the Livestock Identification and Traceability System South Africa, a web-based and desktop application that registers the vaccinations of registered animals and manages the movement of livestock for the purposes of disease control; and a microarray-based technology used in the development of miniaturised biological assays to screen against bacterial pathogens, HIV and cancer for drug discovery purposes.
The CSIR will also expose learners to energy storage technologies. The organisation houses an indoor energy storage testbed facility that provides expertise aimed at strengthening South Africa’s ability to support local players in the battery value chain, thereby boosting the country’s capabilities in renewable energy storage. The facility equips the CSIR to test the performance and reliability of batteries, as expressed by their storage capacity, lifecycle and depth of discharge.
