CSIR warning to the public about a job scam

Publication Date:
Thursday, March 29, 2018 - 00:00

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has noted, with great concern, the use of its name in a scam aimed at swindling young people by promising them unfounded job placements at the organisation.

It has been brought to the attention of the organisation that there are two individuals calling themselves Stephen and Sherinne who claim that they are working for the CSIR recruitment office and are looking for young people to hire.

According to the information we have, Stephen finds young, job-seeking ladies on social media platforms then Sherinne contacts them for a “telephonic interview”, using a private number. After the interview, Stephen asks to meet with the “candidate” at a certain location, where he demands sex in order to secure the “job”.

The CSIR, as an accountable and transparent employer, wishes to warn the public about this scam. It is worth noting that CSIR vacancies are advertised in mainstream newspapers, are available on the website: www.csir.co.za and promoted through the CSIR official social media platforms.

Any meetings pertaining to the recruitment process, after one has applied for a position advertised on any of the abovementioned platforms, will take place at the CSIR offices.

We would like to urge the youth not to engage with anyone claiming to be an employee of the CSIR, especially if that individual requests any aberrant activities to secure employment.

As such, we also encourage the victims of this scam to come forward or report these criminal acts at the nearest South African Police Service station.
