Local scientists to meet Nobel Laureates in Germany

South Africa's top young scientists will rub shoulders with the world's best minds, including over 30 Nobel Laureates, when they attend the 66th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting in June.

The eight young scientists will travel to Germany after emerging tops in a tough international selection process to participate in the meeting. The successful participants are outstanding undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral students under the age of 35 years in the field of physics, which is the focus of this year's 66th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting.

The eight young scientists will travel to Germany after emerging tops in a tough international selection process to participate in the meeting. The successful participants are outstanding undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral students under the age of 35 years in the field of physics, which is the focus of this year's 66th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting.

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) will host the top eight young scientists from around the country in Pretoria on 10 and 11 May. The event will also serve as a send-off for the successful participants.

The eight participants include five nominated by the Academy of Science of South Africa, and three who applied directly to the Lindau Foundation from South Africa.

They are:

  • Luyanda Noto (University of the Free State)
  • Nicholas Engelbrecht (North-West University)
  • Sphumelele Ndlovu (University of KwaZulu-Natal)
  • Siyambonga Matshawule (University of the Western Cape)
  • Gregory Jackson (University of Cape Town)
  • Sidiki Zongo (University of South Africa)
  • Agnes Mbonyiryivuze (University of Cape Town and the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World Fellow)
  • Adriana Marias (University of KwaZulu-Natal)

The 66th Lindau Nobel Laureates convene in Lindau, Bavaria, from 26 June to 1 July 2016 to meet the next generation of leading scientists, including undergraduates, PhD students and postdoctoral researchers from all over the world. The Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetingsfoster scientific exchange among Nobel Laureates and young scientists – across different generations and cultures.
