CSIR webinar: CSIR-led research study warns of global decline in ocean production

An extensive analysis of 26 years of satellite data across a diverse range of algorithms has revealed a troubling trend: a widespread decline in ocean productivity affecting ocean ecosystem services. This decline presents serious challenges, not only to marine biodiversity but also to the interconnected systems that sustain human life and help regulate the Earth’s climate. On Wednesday, 12 February 2025, Dr Tommy Ryan-Keogh, a principal researcher at the CSIR, will present groundbreaking findings of a research study published in Nature’s scientific journal Communications Earth & Environment. The study reveals that climate models have been underestimating the global decline in ocean productivity, a consequence of rising ocean warming. This webinar will delve into the ocean's crucial role in the carbon cycle, its impact on marine ecosystems and its influence on biodiversity. Additionally, it will explore the broader effects of declining ocean productivity on vital resources for human livelihoods, including fisheries, the trophic system and marine resources that are integral to sustaining human livelihoods.
