Sumaya Khan
Khan’s research interests lie in mining, with a special focus on geotechnical engineering (open cast mines), and the socio-economic impacts of mine modernisation.

Khan holds a BSc Honours (Engineering Geology) from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. She worked in a consulting environment as an engineering geologist, both, in the civil engineering and mining industries. She joined the CSIR in 2019 and has been involved in training and quality assurance and quality control on geotechnical data acquisition, geotechnical engineering (rock mechanics), open cast mining projects, and projects related to people-centred mine modernisation. She also obtained certificates in financial management, mining engineering and strata control (open cast) from various learning institutions.
