From the air to the ground: ‘Kit Cart’ carries the heavy weapons load
The CSIR developed a load carriage system for the Infantry Formation to assist in moving weapon systems from the drop zone into and between firing positions. The final, qualified cart system is air droppable and modular in design to allow for quick deployment, fitment of interchangeable wheels and easy field maintenance. Future development will include the integration of an electric drive system. The cart carries weapon systems and ammunition, lightening the soldiers’ already significant load.
Power management during deployment
Power supply for soldiers deployed to remote positions remains a challenge as equipment critical to mission success, such the Global Positioning System or communication systems, needs to be recharged. One such solution is our Muscle system – a power management system that uses available energy sources in the field to replenish equipment batteries. By using Muscle, a soldier can recharge a radio using a vehicle battery, solar power or power mains in countries with electrical outputs that differ from South African plugs.
Our capabilities
Our focus is on the operational needs of soldiers – particularly in the case of remote deployments, such as peace support operations in Africa. This includes waste management, reducing the environmental footprint of troops, water treatment, food management, as well as perimeter detection and non-lethal protection systems for areas with dangerous animals. Our capabilities include design, modelling and simulation and prototype building, which often requires three-dimensional printing, in workshops and during field trials and testing.

On-site product development workshops
Having access to well-equipped workshops allows us to design, prototype, test and conduct small-scale production of unique parts or platoon-specific requirements. Everything from cutting and welding to sophisticated additive manufacturing and computer machining can be done – all under strict security control.
