Energy storage testbed
We provide independent testing and validation of residential, commercial and utility-scale batteries to ensure compliance with safety and performance standards, protecting consumers and supporting local manufacturers. Additionally, we develop local battery standards and recycling protocols and offer technical guidance to support national energy strategies and procurement efforts.

Highlights
Our research
The CSIR Energy Storage Testbed was established with support from the World Bank Energy Storage Partnership, the Flemish Institute for Technological Research in Belgium and the South African and Flemish governments.
Our track record and impact
Advancing the local battery industry
We recently developed a new protocol for recycling lithium-ion batteries in partnership with Mintek, addressing potential future challenges of battery waste in landfills. Additionally, we will be deploying a locally developed lithium manganese oxide battery on the CSIR campus in Pretoria to showcase its capabilities and collect performance data in a real-world setting. These projects support our goal of advancing South Africa’s battery industry and expanding market knowledge.
Independent testing
Our work also provides independent testing to protect local consumers and ensure the quality of imported batteries. We collaborate with policymakers and government agencies to support the enforcement of testing practices. The facility features precise multi-channel battery testing and a temperature chamber for assessing battery performance under challenging climatic conditions. Additionally, we assess key performance and reliability parameters, including storage capacity, lifecycle and depth of discharge.
Work with us
We invite national and regional authorities, as well as public or private enterprises, to use our independent battery testing services and collaborate with our experts to develop South Africa’s battery industry while protecting consumers. Please contact our research group leader or email @email.
