Meet #CSIR junior cybersecurity researcher Caroline Makokoe, who embarked on a remarkable journey of academic achievement, professional growth and community service.

Caroline Makokoe, a 28-year-old junior cybersecurity researcher, has embarked on a remarkable journey of academic achievement, professional growth and community service. Born in Gelukspan District Hospital, within Mahikeng Local Municipality, South Africa, Caroline's upbringing in the vibrant township of Itsoseng laid the foundation for her resilience and determination.

During her early years, she initially resided in New Bethel Village with her mother before joining her parents in Itsoseng, where she remained until completing her matriculation. Fluent in both Setswana and English, she seamlessly navigated her education at the North-West University Mahikeng Campus, located less than 35 minutes from her hometown.

Caroline's pursuit of a Bachelor of Science in computer science and geography faced challenges, but these obstacles moulded her character and strengthened her resolve. Despite her initial desire to enter the workforce after completing her undergraduate degree, she felt compelled to enrol in an honours programme in computer science, a decision that proved pivotal in shaping her future.

In March 2023, she seized an internship opportunity at the CSIR, marking her first step towards professional advancement beyond her hometown. Despite her father’s initial reservations, she embarked on this new chapter with determination and conviction. The same week she commenced her internship, she also registered for her master's degree in computer science, focusing on machine learning, demonstrating her commitment to continuous learning and development.

Throughout her academic journey, Caroline remained actively engaged in community service, volunteering with GoAllOut.org. Her contributions to community development and fundraising efforts earned her recognition and two certificates. Additionally, her involvement in the North West Lutheran Youth League Executive Committee since 2017 reflects her dedication to serving her church and youth community.
