The CSIR will proudly feature at the South African Pavilion with the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy at the 2025 Investing in African Mining Indaba taking place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 3 to 6 February.

With eight decades of experience in pioneering bespoke innovations, the CSIR boasts a workforce where over 70% specialise in engineering, science, and technology. By assembling multidisciplinary teams and drawing on unique laboratory infrastructure, the CSIR delivers cutting-edge solutions across high-impact industries like mining. As a trusted and strategic innovation partner, the CSIR supports the sector in advancing efficient, safe, and sustainable mining practices and operations.

As an entity of the Department of Science, Technology, and Innovation (DSTI), the CSIR brings to the Mining Indaba a selection of unique capabilities and innovations born from modern 4IR technologies such as virtual reality, digital twinning, cyber threat detection, additive manufacturing, and metallurgical techniques. Known for consistent quality, reliability, and future thinking, these are examples of the organisation’s commitment to the modernisation of mining, attaining zero harm and deepening localisation of mining technologies.

Examples include a multi-modal, integrative software ecosystem as a backbone for control rooms, the digital Rock Engineering Assistant that safeguards the integrity of data in mines and the Trackless Mobile Machine system, which simulates onsite traffic to optimise routing and prevent vehicle collision. Photonics experts will show home-grown laser-based tools for refurbishing components – thus preventing costly replacement and downtime. Additionally, from the metallurgy sector, the CSIR is revealing the capabilities of a newly established hot isostatic press facility recently acquired through the DSTI.

A team from the CSIR will be present at the event and will participate in various panel discussions, sharing insights and contributing to the industry dialogue on the future of mining.

The Mining Indaba attracts large numbers of local and international visitors each year. This provides the local industry with an opportunity to present its offerings and opportunities, potentially opening global markets and partnerships.

Gauteng-based members of the media are invited to visit the CSIR’s mining laboratories in Johannesburg or the CSIR Photonics Centre and other laboratories in Pretoria after the event for greater exposure to research, development and innovation in the mining and metals sector.
