On Friday, 29 September 2023, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) hosted students from the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and Leap School of Science and Maths from Ga-Rankuwa.

The CSIR NextGen Enterprises and Institutions cluster’s Spectrum Access and Management Innovation team, represented by Mla Vilakazi, Nosipho Mthethwa, Rozeena Ebrahim and Mompati Keetile, exhibited the technologies they work with and provided insights into their daily responsibilities to the students.

Rozeena Ebrahim, a graduate-in-training at the cluster, says, “The event was an enjoyable experience, allowing us to engage with the scholars and students. We not only had the opportunity to showcase our work in the ICT sector, but also provide career guidance by sharing our own experiences. It was very encouraging to witness the students’ keen interest in our presentations and their overall enthusiasm in STEM.”

The students’ visit served as an industry excursion aimed at providing them with insights into job shadowing, career opportunities and a deeper understanding of the CSIR’s overall activities. This experience was designed to help them make well-informed decisions regarding science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation careers.  The visiting group hailed from the Leap School of Science and Maths in Ga-Rankuwa, while the students came from TUT, Ga-Rankuwa campus.

“The visit was successful. I appreciated the active engagement of the students in our research, and their questions demonstrated a clear understanding of our presentations. Overall, I believe the event successfully achieved its objectives,” says Nosipho Mthethwa, a candidate researcher at the CSIR.

The CSIR also provided information on its bursary application process, career prospects and vocational opportunities to the students. Overall, the CSIR was honoured to host students from the Leap School of Science and Maths, as well as TUT, offering them a glimpse of the work done by the CSIR and on how to join the people-centric organisation.
