The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has collaborated with MERCK, a German multinational science and technology company, to deliver the first Quality Control and Downstream Operations in Biomanufacturing course.
The course is part of the CSIR’s three-year African biomanufacturing workforce training and skills development programme.
Held under the theme, “Implementing Science-Based Solutions and Strategies for Coastal Resilience”, the duo from the CSIR’s Coastal Systems and Earth Observation Research Group showcased the recent research findings from their PhDs indicating that the increasing pressure that South African coastal zones and ecosystems are facing stem from anthropogenic factors.
Omarjee shared the findings of a study based on the daily influence of eutrophication on pH in aquatic ecosystems. Here, laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the influence of aquatic biomass on pH variability during diurnal intervals.
CSIR researchers left no stone unturned to showcase their work at the recent annual conference of the International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA)-South Africa held in Rustenburg, North West, from 27 to 30 August 2024. Themed “From roar to revolution: unleashing the future of integrated environmental management,” the flagship event was attended by eight CSIR experts in environmental management.

As we transition from mild to warmer temperatures in the southern African spring, our summer season is likely to be affected by the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) which has a prominent influence on the region’s climate and weather. This ocean-atmosphere phenomenon oscillates between an El Niño or La Niña state of varying intensity. The last four years have seen three La Niña events and an El Niño event last summer.
