CSIR hosts hundreds of learners from marginalised schools to encourage uptake of STEM careers
The CSIR hosts learners at its annual career day aimed at igniting an interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) among grade 9, 10 and 11 learners who have chosen mathematics and science as their subjects.
Haasbroek and fellow CSIR engineer, Vuyo Ndayi, represented the CSIR at Datawell BV from 17 to 21 July 2023 for the specialised Waverider® technical training in the Netherlands. The training focused on Waverider® buoy maintenance, fault identification and servicing. During their four-day visit, Haasbroek and Ndayi gained valuable insights into the existing hardware and software, as well as the new hardware and software developments taking place at Datawell BV®.
National Science Week is an initiative of the Department of Science and Innovation aimed at celebrating science and its significant impact on society. During the launch, thousands of learners from various schools in and around Vhembe District will be exposed to an assortment of activities aimed at exposing them to various career pathways and skills required in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation (STEMI), with the hope of encouraging them to pursue careers in STEMI.
The students wanted to visit the CSIR to learn about the latest research in agriculture, water, climate change and remote sensing. On 8 June 2023, candidate researchers from the Holistic Climate Change research group attended the Climate Action Youth Seminar 2023, hosted by Ranyaka Community Transformation, a national non-profit organisation (NPO), in partnership with the Nedbank Proud of my Town programme and the City of Tshwane.
Modelling assessment of green hydrogen
On Tuesday, 20 June 2023, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) partnered with the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) and Energy Council of South Africa to establish a modelling capacity to support the just energy transition (JET).
The CSIR, together with project partners, convened the first scientific briefing about the potential effects of the looming El Niño at the University in Pretoria on 19 June. A panel of climate experts shared technical and impact information with representatives of the business community and various levels of government to increase their awareness of the impact on global weather patterns associated with the El Niño and La Niña events. This was in light of the potentially strong El Niño that is currently manifesting in the Pacific Ocean region.
