Walters holds a PhD in medical biosciences from the University of the Western Cape. Her area of interest lies in environmental chemistry of emerging contaminants, particularly mercury and nanoparticles, the determination and understanding of the complex cycling trace of metals in the environment, and the ecotoxicity of metal nanoparticles.
