The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) donates mathematical instrument sets and science laboratory equipment to help improve the learning and teaching of mathematics and science in rural KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

The donations form part of the annual Nelson Mandela International Day, which is celebrated on 18 July by the global community to honour Mandela.

During this Mandela month, the CSIR will embark on a science drive to promote careers in mathematics, science and engineering in a bid to encourage learners in rural areas to further their studies in these fields. The science laboratory equipment that will be handed over includes glass beakers, measuring cylinders, a Soxhlet extraction set, desiccators with lids and volumetric flasks.

On Friday, 22 July 2022, the CSIR CEO, Dr Thulani Dlamini, will address learners at Chesterville Secondary School in Durban on the role and importance of science and technology in building a successful and prosperous Africa.

CSIR scientists will also host science career engagement sessions with learners, paint the interior walls of  five classrooms  and hand over mathematical instrument sets to the grade 12 learners.

Two schools in Nongoma, namely Phumanyova High School and Fundukhaliphe High School, will receive a donation of science laboratory equipment and mathematical instrument sets for grade 12 learners. These resources will be handed over to these schools on 28 and 29 July 2022, respectively.
