The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) continues to take science to the masses by supporting the Department of Science and Technology (DST) initiative of celebrating the wonders of science through the National Science Week (NSW).

As the biggest and leading science council in Africa, the CSIR will share its knowledge about science and the impact of its work with the public as part of the  NSW which kick starts on the 5th of August 2017.

Minister of Science and Technology, Mrs Naledi Pandor, will launch the NSW at the Nelson Mandela University Missionvale Campus in Port Elizabeth.

The purpose of the NSW is to increase and heighten the awareness of the role that science plays in society through a countrywide celebration of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Innovation (STEMI). The initiative will see the country engaging in science activities with the aim of promoting science to ordinary people. In light of this year’s theme – “Advancing Science Tourism" - scientists from different entities will be showcasing the link between science and tourism and how science and technology are key to advancing South Africa.

The National Development Plan (NDP) identifies science and technology as a key driver for change and a better South Africa. Supporting the DST in the NSW initiative is the CSIR’s way of contributing to a better South Africa by empowering South African communities about the value of science and technology in our daily lives.

Exhibitions at the CSIR stand will cover areas such as the application of nonwoven and composite materials in aerospace, automotives, marine, construction and packaging industries; cyber security; biorefinery; biopharmaceuticals; careers in optics; opportunities and overview of the CSIR. These various exhibitions are a testament of the CSIR’s multidisciplinary research.
