The CSIR has developed speech and language technology, integrated into a mobile application (app), to support literacy development in South Africa. The app provides a rich digital learning environment that incorporates speech and text technology, allowing learners to interact with automatically generated speech and text in their home language – a first for isiZulu, Sepedi and Afrikaans, three of South Africa’s 11 written official languages.
