CSIR congratulates the Chairperson of its Board, Prof. Thokozani Majozi, for being awarded the National Order of Mapungubwe. This is the highest honour in South Africa, granted by the President of the country, and it recognises South Africans who have accomplished excellence and exceptional achievement in international research areas that have benefitted the country.
The CSIR has embarked on an ongoing research, development and application endeavour to investigate various biometric modalities, which include fingerprints, the iris, ear and face, that were captured at birth or during infancy, in order to determine which modalities are best suited for the automated biometric recognition of children from infancy to adulthood, and beyond.

On the 16th of October 2018, the two organisations renewed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which will see greater support in strengthening the implementation of the space strategies of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the African Union (AU). CSIR, in partnership with the Departments of Science and Technology and Human Settlements, launched the Urban Knowledge Exchange Southern Africa (uKESA), an online platform designed to support government, industry, the private sector, civil society, and academic partners in improving urban development and human settlement practice.

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research’s (CSIR) new research efforts towards providing alternative product and knowledge routes for the asphalt pavement industry are paying off. The intention has been to open up the industry and enable the inclusion of more players (job creation) and eventually engineer economical, yet better performing roads.
The CSIR has been focusing on locally available alternative additives that would be much cheaper than the conventionally imported additives, as well as creating sustainable use of recycled materials that have an economical benefit for the industry, while resolving an environmental challenge for the country.
