In a first for Africa, the CSIR and biotechnology company Sawubona Mycelium have produced 800 litres of liquid cultivated mushrooms called Enokitake for bio-based cosmetic products.  

The CSIR assisted Sawubona Mycelium, a small, medium and micro enterprise (SMME), to scale up the production of high-value products from the mycelium of Enokitake using liquid-cultivation method. The company is bringing the global mushroom ingredients mega-trend to South Africa with the help of the CSIR Biomanufacturing Industrial Development Centre (BIDC).

Scientists at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) were able to operate three Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) measurement simultaneously in the same location.

The BIDC is a CSIR initiative, in partnership with the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and BioPark @ Gauteng (The Innovation Hub) would like to support Small, Medium and Micro-sized Enterprises (SMMEs) in the bio-manufacturing sector, with the aim of creating or expanding bio-manufacturing activity and associated job creation. CSIR and BioPark will partner to deliver a full package to SMMEs, as part of the mentorship programme.
