Decision-support for the development of inclusive smart cities

Project Status:
Ongoing

The CSIR is involved in an ongoing initiative aimed at supporting government (in particular, local government) and other role players, including the private sector, with making informed decisions related to the identification, planning and implementation of inclusive smart city initiatives that are appropriate to the South African context.

The study aims to highlight some of the opportunities and challenges that would influence decisions when considering the development of settlements that are not only smart, but also inclusive.

The team developed a South African smart cities framework in collaboration with the Department of Cooperative Governance. The purpose of the framework is to guide decision-making and provide municipalities and other role-players with a structured approach to assist with identifying and implementing smart city initiatives that are appropriate to the local context.
