Taljaard has a PhD in geography and environmental studies specialising in integrated coastal management from Stellenbosch University. Her key competencies are in biogeochemical (water quality) characteristics and processes in coastal systems (including estuaries) and their responses to global change pressures, development and application of coastal water quality and integrated coastal management plans and best practice guidelines (e.g. facilitating effective development and implementation of policy), and the development and application of policies and methods linked to the effective management of estuaries.
