Conventional reading is currently accessible only to the traditionally literate person. Many school learners face barriers to reading, and consequently learning, due to early literacy difficulties, visual impairment, dyslexia and other special educational needs. The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is helping to change this with the development of a user-friendly application (app) that adds and synchronises human-narrated or computer-generated audio to text.

The CSIR has released the first three technical reports on the circular economy in South Africa’s mining, agriculture and manufacturing sectors. The reports, which explore the appropriateness of circular economy interventions and their level of implementation in South Africa, can be downloaded from www.circulareconomy.co.za/csir.
The Mandela Mining Precinct (MMP) today displayed two lighter, significantly faster, quieter and more energy-efficient rock drills at its premises in Johannesburg, showcasing new technology that could offer safety in South African mines.
The drills were manufactured by two local original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), Hydro Power Equipment (HPE) and Novatek, as part of the MMP's industry innovation challenge, the Isidingo Drill Design Challenge.
The deteriorating quality of raw water, coupled with current water shortages, has created an urgent need to protect the country’s water resources and ensure effective water and wastewater management in South Africa. According to the Water and Sanitation Master Plan (DWA, 2019), 56% of the 1 150 municipal wastewater treatment works are in a poor or critical condition, while 11% are dysfunctional. This implies that South Africa’s water resources are negatively impacted and polluted by wastewater that is not properly treated.

The Board of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has unanimously agreed to extend the employment contract of its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr Thulani Dlamini for another five years. Dr Dlamini’s current contract would have ended on 31 January 2022.
Chairperson of the CSIR Board, Prof Thokozani Majozi said of the renewal: “We are pleased to announce that the CSIR Board has approved the renewal of the CEO’s contract for another five years, commencing on 1 February 2022”.
