The CSIR’s African Biomanufacturing Workforce Training and Skills Development Programme conferred certificates to 25 participants who completed training in biomanufacturing technologies on 23 May 2024.

Participants were drawn from academic institutions, small, medium and micro enterprises, industry organisations within the biomanufacturing sector and other research councils in Botswana, Egypt, Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania and Zimbabwe.

As South Africa prepares to host experts and leaders from the world’s port and waterborne sector, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) anticipates putting its 11 000 m2 coastal and hydraulics laboratory, the largest facility of its kind in Africa, on display. The facility, commonly referred to as the model hall, has been key in CSIR’s impact on the local and international coastal engineering and port scene.

Proposals for grant funding are hereby invited for the following two separate and independent elements within the RISP:

A. Regional Innovation Networking Platforms aimed at establishing networking platforms to bring together research, development and innovation communities, technology SMMEs, industry and government.
B. Feasibility study or business plan support for innovation enabling mechanisms such as:
a. Science and Technology Parks, Techno Parks, Innovation Hubs, Tech Hubs or other similar concepts.
b. Other innovation enabling mechanisms and initiatives.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has acknowledged CSIR’s Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) programme and its pivotal role towards achieving biodiversity at the Inaugural Biodiversity Economy and Investment Indaba held at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg on 26 March 2024.

Delivering his keynote address, President Ramaphosa called on industry, finance institutions, philanthropists, civil society, traditional leaders, healers and practitioners to collectively embrace the country’s vision for a transformed biodiversity economy.
