CSIR Biophotonics research group leader, Dr Patience Mthunzi-Kufa was one of 20 young scientists selected and invited by the Department of Science and Technology to represent South Africa at the 2nd Annual BRICS Young Scientist Forum in China, Zhejiang University.
The University of the Free State (UFS) has appointed the CSIR’s Gugu Hlengiwe Mhlongo as an affiliated associated professor in the physics department. Mhlongo is the first and youngest black African female from the CSIR who has been appointed into this position. She has a rich history with the institution; she completed her Doctorate at UFS and was the first black woman to do so.
CSIR researchers, Nyalleng Moorosi, Dr Vukosi Marivate and Dr Benjamin Rosman, including CSIR Modelling and Digital Science Executive Director Prof. Fulufhelo Nelwamondo, will be participating in the first Deep Learning Indaba taking place from 10 - 15 September 2017.
The CSIR coastal flood risk viewer is an interactive web-based tool to visualise the extent of coastal flooding in specific areas. This information is relevant for coastal development planning and disaster management in the light of climate change projections which indicate that sea levels will rise and the frequency and intensity of ocean storm-related floods will increase.
The research symposium will be co-hosted by the CSIR and the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies, Germany, under the project consortium ‘Mobilising the multiple benefits of renewable energies’ by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB). The fires in the Garden Route in June 2017 caused unprecedented destruction in Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Thornhill near Port Elizabeth. The CSIR provided direct support to the disaster personnel on the ground through its Advanced Fire Information System (AFIS) and the organisation is now supporting efforts to rebuild the area by mapping the burnt area for post-disaster assessments.
