A journal paper titled Brightness Enhancement in a Solid State Laser by mode of Transformation by the CSIR’s Dr Darryl Naidoo, has been published in the Optical Society’s high impact journal Optica. His published work formed part of his PhD studies in which the research idea was developed by Prof. Andrew Forbes of the University of the Witwatersrand and theoretically developed by his CSIR colleague, Dr Igor Litvin.

Media advisory

Female researchers from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) will brief the media on some of the ground-breaking research they are working on to improve the lives of South Africans.

The briefing, scheduled to take place at the CSIR campus in Pretoria, on Wednesday, 29 August 2018, will focus on some of the research breakthroughs in health sciences aimed at improving the state of health care in the country.

The CSIR aims to attract the next generation of scientists at the 18th annual Sasol TechnoX, currently underway in Sasolburg, Free State province.

The Sasol TechnoX, which started yesterday, 13 August 2018, is a week-long exhibition that focuses on displays, workshops, tours, talks and hands-on activities aimed at enthusing learners, students and the general public about opportunities to be explored in the field of science and technology. The exhibition seeks to expose, at a practical level, the many facets of technology and encourage learners to explore the wide range of exciting disciplines and career choices that mathematics, science and technology offer.

South Africa is set to launch its first Research Chairs to assist in addressing the challenges and opportunities around solid waste management.

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) will launch the South African Research Chairs on Waste and Climate, and on Waste and Society, in Pretoria on Tuesday, 14 August 2018.

International research shows that high crop loads are associated with high water demands. However, CSIR senior researcher Dr Sebinasi Dzikiti explains that no information currently exists on the water requirements of high-yielding apple orchards in South Africa and elsewhere. Thus, to support apple growers in a country saddled with water challenges, the CSIR has partnered with the Water Research Commission (WRC), the Agricultural Research Council, the South African Apple and Pear Producers Association represented by Hortgro Science, and the Universities of Stellenbosch and Pretoria to determine the water requirements of fruit trees with a particular focus on apple trees, from planting to full bearing age.
