The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) will display various biometric solution technologies at the ID4Africa 2019 conference, taking place in Johannesburg, from 18 to 20 June 2019. These technologies include the biometric recognition of children, a technology developed to verify the identities of children using specific biometrics, such the iris, ear and face.

The CSIR has embarked on an ongoing research, development and application endeavour to investigate various biometric modalities, which include fingerprints, the iris, ear and face, that were captured at birth or during infancy, in order to determine which modalities are best suited for the automated biometric recognition of children from infancy to adulthood, and beyond.  

“The project for the Biometric Recognition of Children is being endorsed and supported by South African government entities that are aware of the challenges involved in recognising children. Public support, which is essential for the implementation of identity solutions, is evident from the consent of parents and the participation of children in the development and assessment of our biometric systems. We are also engaging with authorities for the application of biometrics in public safety, border control and the security of public spaces,” says Erick Dube, CSIR Impact Area Manager for Information Security.

The CSIR will be highlighting an array of CSIR-developed biometric solutions at the conference, and will be participating in the In Focus 15 session – Spotlight on Infant Biometrics session, where Mr Yaseen Moolla, a senior researcher at the CSIR, will be discussing Biometric Recognition of Children. The session will be held on Wednesday, 19 June 2019 from 17:00 to 18:30.
