The Centre for High Performance Computing is contributing to a strong base of high-performance computing skills in South Africa. This is key as supercomputing has become indispensable in modelling complex physical events in astronomy, climate change and genetics, with the list of applications continuing to grow as different fields are introduced to its possibilities.

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) high-performance computing forum has also expressed interest in sending observers to the Student Cluster Competition of the International Supercomputing Conference in the hopes of establishing a regional competition to advance high-performance computing in Southern Africa. Member states of the SADC discuss the implementation of the high-performance computing framework of the region at the CHPC National Conference.
