The Pavement Design and Construction research group provides specialists services in pavement design, integrating the latest research. It also provides best practice and advanced construction methodology solutions to address the current and future road infrastructure service delivery needs of the country. The focus is on the adaptation and diffusion of technologies of the fourth industrial revolution (4IR) in the provision of low-carbon, climate-resilient road infrastructure. The integration of 4IR technologies in pavements enables platforms for smart roads.

Offerings:

• Solutions for cost-effective design, construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of transport infrastructure assets – pavement design and construction capacitate local road authorities; and
• Science engineering and technology solutions for the cost-effective design, construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of transport infrastructure assets (i.e., roads, airports, railway ballast and underlying structures).
   

Capabilities:

• Physical modelling through validating/calibrating/improving structural design methods and performance models;
• Developing climate-resilient infrastructure through the daptation and diffusion of 4IR technologies, including new equipment and instrumentation in the provision of low-carbon, climate-resilient road infrastructure; and
• A smart pavement design software system by enabling technologies and platforms for smart roads.
