Afika Singano, CSIR researcher in transport

Meet #CSIR researcher, Afika Singano, whose focus areas are transportation engineering, transport modelling and spatial data management.

Afika Singano is a researcher who joined the CSIR in 2022 within the transport systems and operations impact area. He specialises in GIS, remote sensing and machine learning. He holds a Bachelor of Science Honours in geoinformatics from the University of Pretoria and an undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Geology and Geography from the University of the Witwatersrand.

His focus areas are transportation engineering, transport modelling and spatial data management. Singano has worked with various stakeholders on projects related to the Mpumalanga Infrastructure Master Plan, Logistics Observatory, Minibus Taxi Network Hierarchy and CoJ Secondary Network Plan. Currently, he is developing machine learning algorithms to detect and classify roads and their conditions using satellite imagery. Moreover, he is working on a KwaZulu-Natal public transport master plan research project.

Additional information

Singano is pursuing a Master of Science in geoinformatics from the University of Pretoria, which he will complete in August 2024.
