Full Profile

Warren Bilgeri has obtained a BTech (Electrical Engineering) and an MBA from the University of South Africa and the University of Witwatersrand, respectively. He is leading the development of low-power wearable trackers that will improve the safety of society.

Warren’s interests lie in developing embedded products for mining, wearables, and telemetry-related applications. Specific interests include conceptualisation of new products and solutions, designing safety-critical systems for harsh environments, ergonomics and optimising energy efficiency with hardware and firmware.

He started his career by developing software to optimise diamond cuts and shapes for diamond-cutting machines. He then progressed to developing embedded telemetry solutions for the free-space optics and vehicle tracking industries.

In 2008, he founded an embedded development company called CadWare. Prior to joining the CSIR in 2015, he was consulted to develop embedded wireless sensor network products for the mining industry and developed GPS/GSM products for the vehicle tracking industry, where thousands of devices were manufactured and deployed in several countries.

At the CSIR, he has developed life-critical sensing and warning systems for use in harsh environments. He developed the Integrated Thermal and Acoustic Device prototype, which uses a thermal camera and artificial intelligence on acoustics to detect loose rocks in mines.

Though his expertise is in embedded product development, Bilgeri has developed a website for the mining industry, creating a novel, interactive 3D map for users to explore the site.
