Kgarume holds an MSc degree in Geophysics fom the University of the Witwatersrand. He is involved in the application of geophysical techniques in the mining industry for optimal ore extraction and the improvement of health and safety. He has authored and co-authored a number of peer-reviewed papers, most recently on the application of 3D ground- penetrating radar to mitigate the risk associated with falls of ground in Bushveld Complex platinum mines.
