The second phase of the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) for wind and solar photovoltaic (PV) energy in South Africa proposes three additional Renewable Energy Development Zones (REDZs) for wind and solar photovoltaic energy projects.

The REDZs support the responsible implementation of the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP 2019) that was recently gazetted by the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy on 17 October 2019. Renewable energy projects that could be developed in these new REDZ have the potential to make significant contributions to mine rehabilitation and to support a just energy transition in the specified areas including where 12 GW of existing coal power stations are planned to be decommissioned by 2030.

The CSIR is at an advanced stage of implementing its new strategy, a move that will see the adoption of a re-organised CSIR-wide operating model.

To this end, the science, engineering and technology (SET) staff reorganisation and confirmation commenced in August 2019 and this process was completed successfully in September 2019. After a rigorous process of reviewing and benchmarking against our peers, both locally and internationally, in October 2019, we commenced with the reorganisation of our support staff across the CSIR.

The CSIR Information Services (CSIRIS) mandate is to enable CSIR Research Development & Innovation (RD&I) by providing relevant and trusted data, information and knowledge management servic

CSIR welcomes the gazetting of the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) 2019, by Minister Gwede Mantashe, on 18 October 2019. The finalisation of the IRP should provide the necessary certainty to all stakeholders as far as security of supply and energy mix choices in the medium to long-term is concerned.

The CSIR has made its initial insights available and highlighted the key risks and opportunities for South Africa that emanate from the IRP 2019.

The Mandela Mining Precinct will be unveiling two cutting-edge rock drill prototypes, designed for conventional mining in South Africa. The event will take place in Johannesburg on Tuesday, 19 November 2019.

Information security

The Information Security Research Centre focuses on the processes, methodologies and techniques used to protect information from unauthorised access. The centre was established in response to an identity authentication capability need from cradle to grave for persons, as well as device and channel security. It is also driven by the need for research and development of technologies that can be deployed locally to secure state information without relying on imported technologies that can be used maliciously to acquire critical information through deliberate or unintended back doors.

The CSIR Information Security Centre identifies three principles of information security:

  • Confidentiality – only authorised parties have access to information;
  • Integrity – no unauthorised modifications to information is permitted; and
  • Availability – reliable and timely access to data.

The centre focuses on two areas, namely identity authentication and network and data security. The network and data security team provides support to person identity authentication solutions through the provision of networking solutions, data security and analysis of access patterns.

The Mandela Mining Precinct has unveiled two new rock drill prototypes developed by local innovators to enhance drilling operations, a significant move to advance the mining sector in the country.

The two high-tech prototype rock drills are set to reduce the exposure of operators to dangerous conditions and contribute to the aim of zero harm in mines. The prototypes are the culmination of an open innovation challenge launched in 2018 to develop a new rock drill for the South African mining industry.
