This multidisciplinary science, engineering and technology base is made up of individuals who are highly specialised in their respective fields. They are geneticists, virologists, software developers, polymer chemists, applied mathematicians and industrial engineers, just to name a few.

O’Connell’s research focuses on the introduction of a new performance-graded binder specification for pavement construction in southern Africa, and the establishment of bituminous binder ageing models which can be linked to asphalt pavement life expectancy and pothole development.
Johakimu’s key competencies are in wood science, fibre processing, bio-refining and cleaner production practices.
Jideani’s research interests include the design and development of signal processing algorithms with a particular focus on underwater sonar imaging systems.
Nortje’s key competencies are in qualitative research methodology, stakeholder communication and consultation and understanding socio-cultural issues pertaining to cultural behaviour and its significance in relation to the natural environment, as well as conservation and natural resource management, particularly socio-cultural approaches to ecosystem goods and services.
