In celebration of Women’s Day on 9 August 2021, this edition of ScienceScope focuses on CSIR women. Some of the women featured are involved in Covid-19-related research, while others are working, alongside their colleagues – the men and women of the CSIR – to continue with work that will help make South Africa more competitive, despite a world pandemic.

The CSIR is looking for partners to license and commercialise a patented process for the production of Ambrafuran - a highly sought-after agent in the fragrance industry that is used as a fixative for very expensive frangrances.

The CSIR is looking for partners to license and co-finance the commercialisation of polymer formulations that offer great improvements and diversity in plastic packaging applications. EoI may be submitted by compounders to produce and sell the formulations, or by converters to incorporate the technology in films or by agents who will develop new products.

The CSIR is looking for partners to license and co-finance the commercialisation of maleic anhydride grafted polymer formulations in South Africa. The grafted polymers can be used as a compatibiliser for various applications.

KfW Development Bank, on behalf of the German government, has launched a concessional financing initiative seeking to catalyse the development of a green hydrogen economy in South Africa. A Request for Information (RFI) has been launched to facilitate an open, participatory process to obtain information from companies and consortia that would be interested in presenting green hydrogen project proposals.

The CSIR in partnership with the United Nations (UN) Women South Africa Multi-Country Office (SAMCO), is involved in an initiative to develop, strengthen and build the capacity of Women Business Enterprises (WBEs), which are led or owned by women, to participate in the agriculture and agro-processing, and construction sectors.
