CSIR Microbiology and Parasitology Laboratory

The CSIR Microbiology and Parasitology Laboratory has played a key role in the development of wastewater-based epidemiology disease tracking and monitoring approaches during the Covid-19 pandemic. This added to the laboratory’s reputation, acquired over more than two decades, as a specialised and reliable provider of tests for niche waterborne pathogens. The facility focuses on niche waterborne microbes, like viruses and parasites, that require specialised equipment and approaches.

Charting the future of science, technology and innovation (STI), the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) jointly hosted a workshop on the Decadal Plan from 22 to 23 November 2021. This workshop, which took place at the CSIR’s Knowledge Commons, with key CSIR and DSI drivers, largely focussed on STI priority areas in support of the societal grand challenges.

This year saw the integration of two key South African partners in the 4IR space namely, Robotics and Mechatronics (RobMech) and the Pattern Recognition Association of South Africa (PRASA). The conference was attended by experts in the fields of additive manufacturing, electrical engineering, pattern recognition, robotics, and mechatronics.
