This year, from 13 to 15 February 2023, the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study hosted 38 scholars, project leaders, associated researchers and institutional partners who supported and facilitated the robust exchange of ideas and knowledge on laser science and technology.

The conference is limited to ALC-associated researchers and students and aims to encourage interaction between grant holders and students.

In December 2022, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), through its Information and Cybersecurity Research Centre, was inducted into the Charter of Trust (CoT) as an Associated Partner.

The CSIR is the first organisation in Africa to be admitted into the CoT’s Associated Partner Forum (APF).

The CSIR was nominated into the CoT by Siemens AG. The nomination was followed by the CSIR giving presentations to the CoT Management Forum and, ultimately, the unanimous approval of the CSIR’s nomination.

2023 RAPDASA-RobMech-PRASA-CoSAAMI conference

The 2023 Rapid Product Development Association of South Africa (RAPDASA), the Robotics and Mechatronics (RobMech), the Pattern Recognition Association of South Africa (PRASA), and the Conference of South African Advanced Materials Initiative (CoSAAMI) invites researchers, academics, and industry professionals to submit high-quality original research papers on topics related to robotics, automation, mechatronics, control systems and materials science.

Load shedding statistics and water cuts in South Africa 

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) will release annual statistics on power generation (1 January 2022 to 31 December 2022) at a hybrid media briefing scheduled to take place on Wednesday, 22 February 2023.

During the four-day event, held from 30 January to 2 February 2023, ACCESS shared in formation and debated on current local research and development initiatives that highlight some of the most pressing climate change challenges, while discussing the overall possible measures that can be taken to tackle the worsening impact of climate change.

As co-hosts and chairs of the three open sessions, Dr Neville Swejid and Dr Carl Palmer led engagements that consisted of vibrant presentations and panel exchanges, all of which evoked the prior noted themes and their associated dynamics. ACCESS hosted two side events focused on research on our changing climate.

The aim of the educational visit was to expose the Forum to various water related research, development and innovation (RD&I) projects taking place at the CSIR. Over 70 individuals attended the education visit and tour.

“Water leakage (non-revenue water), dysfunctional water and wastewater infrastructure, high-cost water treatment technologies, AMD treatment, poor water planning and accountability, dwindling water resources, deteriorating water quality, emerging water pollutants, lack of access to alternative water resources and lack of key domain skills are some of the water challenges being addressed,” noted Hlabela.
