Modelling assessment of green hydrogen

On Tuesday, 20 June 2023, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) partnered with the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) and Energy Council of South Africa to establish a modelling capacity to support the just energy transition (JET).

The CSIR, together with project partners, convened the first scientific briefing about the potential effects of the looming El Niño at the University in Pretoria on 19 June.  A panel of climate experts shared technical and impact information with representatives of the business community and various levels of government to increase their awareness of the impact on global weather patterns associated with the El Niño and La Niña events. This was in light of the potentially strong El Niño that is currently manifesting in the Pacific Ocean region.

The CSIR launched the African Bio-manufacturing Workforce Development and Training Programme in June 2023. The programme, aimed at developing a skilled and competent workforce in the biomanufacturing sector in Africa, is expected to run for three years. The first intake focused on biomanufacturing technologies (CSIR-BT-1A).

  Youths’ contribution to South African industries

Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) staff in Stellenbosch have been saddened by the news that former CSIR coastal engineer Piet Huizinga passed away on 10 June 2023. Known to many as ‘the father of coastal numerical modelling in the CSIR’, he introduced this emerging innovation in the early 1990s when most at the time still viewed the technique of tackling complex geological problems with scepticism.

4IR innovations aimed at improving South Africa’s Health care system

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) will host a hybrid media briefing, where young experts will brief the media on various cutting-edge technologies that they are developing to improve South Africa’s healthcare system using fourth industrial revolution (4IR) technologies.

The 4IR has had a considerable impact on the manufacturing industry, which has encouraged a surge in the automation of medical diagnostics, led by artificial intelligence and the internet of medical things.
